Understanding Fatty Liver: Symptoms and Diagnosis



Fatty liver disease is also referred to as hepatic steatosis. Fatty liver disease is a symptom of the collection of fats in the liver. At first, it can be innocuous, but unless treated can cause other serious health problems grade. What is Fatty Liver Disease?

There are basically two broad types of this disease.

1. Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD): This is the most common form that is not alcohol-related. It is more common among individuals who are overweight, have diabetes, or have high cholesterol.

2. Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD): This is a condition characterized by alcoholism. Alcoholism for long periods causes excess fats to be added to the liver. This means that the liver begins to undergo inflammation and may start self-damage.


Symptoms of Fatty Liver Disease -

In most patients suffering from the disease, especially in the early stages, obesity is not a symptom. As the disease advances, one may also present with some or all of the following signs and symptoms:


1) Exhaustion: A severe feeling of lack of energy without any known cause.

2) Abdominal pain: A feeling of fullness or distension in the right upper quadrant.

3) Weight loss: Some patients can experience unintended weight gain, mainly as the disease advances.

4) Weakness: Patients usually mention generalized weakness or lack of power.

5) Constipation: The patient might either be suffering from constipation or a loss of appetite.

6) Enlarged liver: In extreme cases, the doctor may even notice an enlarged liver during a physical examination.

Most patients with fatty liver disease are asymptomatic, while in its advanced stage, it does affect the liver to a considerable extent.
